Who we are

Woodpecker Court exists for the purpose of improving the life chances of children and young people, where circumstance may have led them to struggle to develop in readiness for adult life. It provides activities and experiences utilising the outdoors to deliver formal and informal education, designed so that experiences out of the classroom bring context to classroom-based delivery. The aims are to improve outcomes for Children, Young People and their Families in terms of skills, knowledge, self-confidence and therefore lifelong prospects.

The objectives are to deliver informal education in the outdoors in combination with qualification delivery, developing a sense of confidence, self-esteem, resilience and therefore the essential employability skills to secure a successful destination, preventing them from becoming NEET. We are working with Kent County Council’s Virtual School, West Berkshire’s Virtual School, Goodwin Academy, Folkestone Academy, Dover Christchurch Academy, The Elms School, Skills Training UK and Hadlow College.

What we offer

We offer a “Forest School” type of environment for KS3 through to KS5 learners. We promote a sense of community by bringing learners of all ages together under the parachute for a breakfast cooked on the open fire, cooked by learners, giving the opportunity to unload the world outside, ensuring a purposeful learning environment can take place. We return to the parachute for lunch. There are two sessions in the morning and afternoon, split between classroom delivery and participation in the informal programme. The outdoor learning includes wood craft, horticulture, animal care, site maintenance, team building, bush craft and cooking. These experiences are explicitly linked to Functional Skills English, Maths, Enterprise, Employability, Personal Development, Occupational Studies for the Workplace, and for those seeking to become vocationally focused, Professional Cookery and Animal Care. We are funded by KCC, ESF and contracts with schools. We offer this package across the Key Stages as follows:

  • KS3 – Engagement programmes only with no formal learning, one or two days per week, contracting to mainstream and special schools, as a self-esteem raising / reengagement / exclusion prevention tool.
  • KS3 – We are actively talking to partners at the moment about adding a KS3 formal learning package as an alternative to PRUs.
  • KS4 – Engagement and formal learning programmes for a substantial part of a learner’s week, where mainstream or special schools can no longer engage the learner. This is aimed at reengaging the learner in learning, preventing exclusion, and generating outcomes in English, Maths and vocational subjects that enable successful transition into KS5.
  • KS5 – NEET prevention full time learning programmes aimed at learners who cannot engage with 6th form or FE. Like the KS4 offer, the aim is to reengage the learner and for them to gain the outcomes required to progress into a destination and not become NEET.

Success and outcomes

Our website contains a number of case studies of individual learners and attainment and progression data. Last year 17 out of 18 learners on the KS5 programme achieved a successful destination. All were NEET upon entry to us. This included a young man who was a 3 year school refuser within the Medical Needs Service, who on arrival would not speak. His big moment was passing his first ever exam. He finished the year with a set of friends, fully socialised, with qualifications in English, Maths, Employability, Enterprise and Occupational Studies. He is now studying Professional Cookery and wants to become a Chef.

We are looking to develop

We have an established method of working that brings results. Our rural setting, balance of formal and informal learning and therapy where required, means vulnerable learners can achieve and sustain a destination. We are endeavouring to expand the model across a wider range of qualifications, such as the partnership we are developing with Hadlow College for Animal Care. Additionally, we are seeking more subcontracting relationships to ensure sustainability. We have a low-cost model that works both morally for vulnerable learners as well as commercially. We are continually seeking more partners to grow our offer, while maintaining our ethos, to ensure we meet the changing needs of society.

Our Organisation

Community Learning and Skills (CLS) is part of Kent County Council (KCC) and comprises two brands; Kent Adult Education and Kent Training and Apprenticeships. Our main function is to provide learning and personal development opportunities for adults, young people and families across Kent, to meet their aspirations for improved work skills, better personal development, strong families and healthy creative lives.

We engage with local communities throughout Kent to provide educational services which match the needs of local communities based on levels of prosperity, employment and priorities. We aim to ensure that our services provide learning appropriate to the needs of individuals and families at various stages in their lives. We actively promote learning in support of economic growth and prosperity, to help adults adapt to the ever-changing world of work, enjoy life and make a positive contribution to the community.

We are funded via a range of annually awarded Education & Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) contracts plus fee income when adults enrol on certain courses.

Our Offer

Kent Adult Education

Kent Adult Education provides an extensive, vibrant, diverse and challenging programme of courses which meet the varied needs and interests of Kent’s communities.

Our courses are delivered across the county in dedicated adult education centres and in neighbourhood settings including community centres, schools, faith venues and children’s centres.

All courses are taught by subject experts with appropriate teaching skills. Our courses are designed to enhance well-being and foster a love for learning by providing high-quality opportunities to discover and develop interests which enrich quality of life.

We work closely with partner organisations and local communities to help us devise and develop learning opportunities which are accessible in terms of price, location and timing.

We also offer courses designed specifically for:

Families – Family courses are informative, practical and fun offering opportunities for parents, carers and their children to enjoy quality time learning new skills, rediscovering some older ones and building confidence.

Disadvantaged areas – The programmes are offered in communities across Kent with the highest levels of socio-economic disadvantage and run in partnership with schools, children’s centres, housing associations and other community groups.

Some courses are designed specifically to help parents and carers support their child at school, focusing particularly on English language and maths, helping parents understand and have confidence about teaching methods in school.

Non-English speakers – Some courses are designed for learners whose first language is not English. They support both adults and children in developing their skills and confidence in using English language with practical sessions focused around the family and community activity.

Courses help parents and carers to improve their own skills and can lead adults to accreditation in maths and English as well as to explore other opportunities for learning, volunteering and paid employment.

Kent Training and Apprenticeships

Kent Training and Apprenticeships have been supporting people to gain qualifications and develop skills for over 30 years. Working with large and small organisations across Kent, we offer high quality accredited and bespoke training.

We can help in lots of ways – getting your interview skills up to scratch, improving your maths or English, achieving occupational qualifications or, if you’re ready, the chance of an Apprenticeship with one of hundred of employers in Kent.

KT&A offers five main services:

Pathfinder – If you have recently finished your studies at school and are trying to work out what to do next then the Pathfinder programme could be for you.

Putting you at the centre of what we do, we have a range of activities to help you build the skills and confidence you need to move towards getting your career started. You can achieve all of this, 2 days a week over 12 weeks.

The benefits of the pathfinder programme include:

Small class sizes where you will be supported by a friendly tutor who will support your individual needs

Gain a Gateway qualification in Living and Working in the UK

Practice for studying English or maths in the future

To identify the skills and strengths you have to offer an employer and then build on these work skills

You will make new friends and complete fun team activities.

Work Ready – Our refreshed Work Ready programme is a personalised programme to help 16-18 year olds (up to 24 with EHCP) not in full time education, employment or training, get the skills and experience and qualifications they need to progress in their career.

Being work-ready is all about having the right skills, knowledge and attitude. The Work Ready programme gives you the opportunity to gain qualifications and practical experience to put on your CV. Many of our young people gain a job, Apprenticeship or go onto further training after completing the course because of the experience and qualifications they have gained in a working environment.

20 week programme, 3 days per week (except weeks 13-18 when on work experience when will be 5 days per week).

Traineeships – A Traineeship will give you the chance to get work experience and improve your English and Maths.

Even if you achieved good grades in maths and English, a Traineeship will help improve your prospects of becoming an Apprentice or a full-time employee. Traineeships provide the all-important work placement, which will improve your working practice and give you experience to put on your CV.

Apprenticeships – KT&A training is delivered by experts in your chosen industry. We make sure you get the right skills to begin building your career. We help match you to an employer who gives you on-the-job training and pays your wages. Depending on the qualification you are working towards, you may also attend one of our centres each week for additional training.

Work Based Training – If you are aged 19 or over and in employment, you may be funded to gain qualifications and additional skills through work-based training


Community Learning and Skills are an Ofsted grade 2 provider achieving “Good ratings” across all areas of inspection (June 2016) and holds Matrix accreditation. Kent Training and Apprenticeships is endorsed by Skills for Care.

We are always looking to develop and improve our offer. Kent Adult Education offers new courses every year, latest additions include accredited craft courses, along with courses to help learners train and care for their dogs. Kent Training and Apprenticeships offers and host of constantly developing programmes. New Apprenticeships include a CMI Apprenticeship in Operations/Department Management at Level 5.

Oliver_TrailorFounded in 2008, Runway Training was born out a need for a more flexible and accessible way for adult learners to gain level 2 English and maths qualifications. Today the Tonbridge based company employs 20 people and offers blended and online learning solutions, as well as a range of professional development courses including AAT, Food Safety and Emergency First Aid.

Oliver Trailor, the Managing Director, founded the company. He identified the need for flexible and accessible maths and English provision whilst he was working at a local Further Education college. Having discussed a potential solution with a local Headmaster, who was becoming frustrated at constantly releasing staff for a whole day, the concept of offering an online course was developed.

“During the early days I used to just work on a laptop and had no fixed office. A day’s work consisted of travelling around various employers to visit learners and then making use of free Wi-Fi at local cafes to complete admin and check e-mails”

Oliver has significantly grown the business and in 2013, launched Runway Apprenticeships, which delivers high quality apprenticeships across the Hospitality & Catering, Accountancy, Business Administration, Customer Service and Health & Social Care sectors.

“Average is never enough”

On a Work Based Hairdressing Apprenticeship you would be employed by a salon on a full time basis and you would work in the salon for 4 days a week and attend the academy in Ashford one day a week. The full City & Guilds Level 2 Apprenticeship takes approx… 2 – 2.5 years and during this time you will not only being paid while you learn but also gain valuable in salon skills for working with other team members, including experienced stylists and clients of all ages.
On your day in the academy you will learn all aspects of hairdressing and work alongside other learners from all over Kent as well as a team of highly qualified, passionate and dedicated Assessors who will help you achieve your dreams of becoming a hairdresser. The Hair Academy is run along the same lines as a normal salon and as you progress you will have your own column and attend to clients.

Here at the academy we work in small teams of no more than of 6 learners per assessor to ensure high quality of training and education. We have several success stories, three of our previous learners now have their own salons, with their own learners are now coming to the academy. Two assessors now working for us were previously learners with the hair academy. This shows the dedication and passion that hairdressers have for their trade.
